We study how complex rhythmic motor patterns are generated and modulated within the CNS (central nervous system). We use the heartbeat network of the leech CNS as a model for study because the interneurons and motor neurons that pace and control the hearts have been identified and are experimentally accessible with electrophysiological, anatomical, and biochemical techniques at the single cell level.
